The Problem
Conventional treatments — pills, apps, generic lifestyle advice — address symptoms. The Sleep Safari targets the root cause.
Circadian rhythm dysfunction, accumulated sleep debt, psychophysiological hyperarousal, and conditioned wakefulness require sustained, evidence-based clinical intervention. We combine the world's most rigorously validated sleep medicine protocols with complete environmental immersion in South Africa's extraordinary landscapes.
The result is not a temporary fix — it is a fundamental reset of your sleep architecture and a lasting change in the neurological pathways that govern your sleep.
Dysregulation of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) resulting in misaligned sleep–wake timing, impaired melatonin secretion, and disrupted cortisol rhythms. Prevalent in shift workers, frequent long-haul travellers, and individuals with chronic insomnia.
Persistent difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep occurring ≥3 nights per week for ≥3 months, with significant daytime impairment. CBT-I is the first-line treatment recommended by the American College of Physicians, superior to pharmacotherapy in long-term outcomes.
Abnormal distribution of sleep stages (N1, N2, N3, REM) producing non-restorative sleep. Manifests as poor sleep efficiency, elevated wake after sleep onset (WASO), and reduced slow-wave and REM sleep — measurable via polysomnography.
Clinical Methodology
Our protocols are drawn from peer-reviewed sleep medicine literature and administered by registered physicians, certified CBT-I therapists, and accredited polysomnography technicians.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia — the gold-standard treatment, incorporating sleep restriction therapy, stimulus control, cognitive restructuring of maladaptive sleep beliefs, and relaxation training. Delivered across individual and group sessions.
Full overnight PSG monitoring including EEG sleep staging (N1–N3, REM), SpO₂, EMG, EOG, and cardiac rhythm. Comparative hypnogram analysis between admission and discharge provides objective, quantifiable outcome data for each participant.
Timed bright-light exposure (10,000 lux) to entrain the circadian pacemaker, combined with strategic darkness protocols and timed melatonin administration — calibrated to advance or delay sleep phase as indicated by each participant's chronotype and DLMO timing.
Continuous wrist-worn accelerometry providing objective sleep–wake data across the full 7-day programme. Analysis of rest–activity rhythms, sleep timing consistency, and circadian amplitude are compared pre- and post-intervention.
Salivary melatonin profiling, serum cortisol rhythm mapping, Vitamin D₃ status, and dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO) testing. Results characterise each participant's circadian phase and inform a fully individualised treatment protocol.
Precisely timed pharmacological support where clinically indicated — including melatonin receptor agonists and short-term hypnotics. Always prescribed as an adjunct to behavioural therapy, never as primary or standalone treatment.
Clinical Governance: All Sleep Safari participants complete a pre-arrival medical screening assessment. A registered physician reviews all contraindications prior to programme acceptance. The Sleep Safari is a supervised medical programme and does not substitute for ongoing psychiatric or specialist care. Participants with complex comorbidities are assessed individually by our medical team prior to admission.
The 7-Day Protocol
Every Sleep Safari follows a structured clinical protocol. Days are spent in purposeful, carefully timed activity designed for maximum circadian benefit. Evenings transition to a supervised wind-down. Nights are under continuous physiological monitoring.
Day-to-day activities vary by experience — urban exploration or Big Five bush immersion — but the clinical schedule is consistent across both programmes.
Day 1
Airport transfer and check-in. Full medical history review. Chronotype assessment (Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire). Actigraphy wrist device fitted. Baseline blood panel (melatonin metabolites, cortisol, Vitamin D₃). Programme orientation and briefing. First overnight PSG baseline study.
Days 2 – 3
Morning PSG debrief with your sleep physician. Timed light therapy session (07:00). First individual and group CBT-I sessions: psychoeducation, sleep hygiene restructuring, sleep diary initiation. Afternoon activity programme begins. Evening wind-down protocol and relaxation training.
Days 4 – 5
Sleep restriction therapy titration. Stimulus control reinforcement. Cognitive restructuring of dysfunctional beliefs and catastrophic thinking around sleep. Biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation training. Ongoing nightly PSG with daily hypnogram review by attending physician.
Day 6
Sleep diary review and pattern analysis. Personalised sleep window optimisation. Maintenance CBT-I session. Relapse prevention planning. Social Zeitgeber reinforcement strategies for reintegration into home environment and time zone.
Day 7
Final PSG study and comparative hypnogram analysis (admission vs. discharge). Formal results debrief with sleep physician. Written sleep prescription. Personalised maintenance plan and reading materials. Structured telemedicine follow-up: 30-day, 90-day, and 6-month check-ins included.
